SPIDAR®

Advanced ground penetrating radar systems

The SPIDAR® family of GPRs enable networking of multiple channels and multiple frequencies for a wide variety of applications. SPIDAR® allows Noggin and pulseEKKO GPR units to be interconnected providing a fully customizable multi-channel GPR platform.

The latest generation of SPIDAR® simplifies the hardware required to connect the GPRs and provides new functionality that enhances data collection and flexibility of the system. The newest generation of SPIDAR® NICs (Network Interface Controllers) enable:

Three new NICs (Network Interface Controllers) to network GPR systems together are now available.

  • Full Wi-Fi enabled data collection – meaning no cables are required between the GPR and the control device (ethernet cables can be used instead of Wi-Fi if desired)
  • Use any device with Wi-Fi (or ethernet) and a compatible browser to control the GPR and view data collection
  • All data is stored directly on the NIC so no data collection or data loss occurs if the connection to the control device is interrupted
  • Advanced timing control to ensure no interference between GPR systems
  • No reduction in speed when running two channels compared to running a single channel
  • Daisy-chain NICs to run any number of GPR systems simultaneously; build multi-frequency or multi-channel array systems
  • Supports odometer input for triggering & positioning and optional external GPS
  • Data can be downloaded via ethernet cable, Wi-Fi or USB

The SPIDAR® architecture provides you the flexibility to build any GPR configuration that you need for your project.

The NICs come with mounting hardware to connect to a standard SmartCart frame or stack multiple NICs.

Our professional custom solutions team can also help you to build custom deployment configurations to meet the demands of your project, or you can build your own.

The SPIDAR® software can be accessed from any compatible browser interface, and allows you to:

  • Configure and setup data collection parameters
  • Control and view data acquisition
  • Manage and export data from the NIC

Once data is acquired, it can easily be downloaded or transferred via USB to a PC and processed using EKKO_Project software.
The NICs come in 3 versions (models):

  • NIC-500N is used to connect multiple Noggin® sensors
  • NIC-500P is used to connect multiple pulseEKKO® Transmitter and Receiver pairs.
  • NIC-500X is an advanced system that enables complex data collection with pulseEKKO® GPR units including configurations beyond standard Transmitter and Receiver pairs

NIC-500N for Noggins®

The NIC-500N connects Noggin® GPR sensors together to build a multi-channel or multi-frequency array system.

  • A single NIC-500N will run 2 Noggins simultaneously
  • The NIC supports any combination of Noggin® sensors (100, 250, 500 and 1000 MHz).
  • Multiple NICs can be daisy-chained to connect any number of Noggins

NIC500N

NIC-500P for pulseEKKO®

The NIC-500P connects pulseEKKO transmitter and receiver pairs to build any configuration system.

  • A single NIC-500P will run 2 pairs of pulseEKKO® transmitters and receivers simultaneously.
  • The NIC supports any combination of pulseEKKO® antenna frequencies (12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200, 250, 500, 1000 MHz).
  • Multiple NICs can be daisy-chained to connect any number of pulseEKKO units

NIC500P

NIC-500X for pulseEKKO®

The NIC-500X provides the most advanced functionality and connects any combination of pulseEKKO transmitters and receivers up to a total of 8.

  • A single NIC-500X will run any combination of pulseEKKO transmitters and receivers up to a total of 8
  • Supports concurrent receiver data collection – multiple receivers can “listen” to one transmitter fire – true multi-fold data collection and seismic-style data processing.
  • Supports sequencing of transmitters and receivers: Transmitters and receivers can be sequenced in any order of firing and listening and are not limited to set transmitter and receiver pairs.
  • SPIDAR software allows for the flexible configuration of concurrent or sequenced data collection
  • For more details see Concurrent Receiver Operation with SPIDAR®

Legacy SPIDAR systems

For customers who use our legacy SPIDAR systems, these are still available to expand your existing systems.

SPIDAR® uses a tree architecture as depicted, with a computer at the top of the structure controlling one or more GPR systems via wired Ethernet. SPIVIEW® control software operating under Windows on the computer provides an integrated user-friendly control and real-time display of all systems status and GPR data.

Noggin® and pulseEKKO® PRO GPR systems are network-enabled using SPIDAR® Network Interface Controllers (NICs). When a multiplicity of NICs must operate together simultaneously, a SPIDAR® HUB provides coordinated communications, power management and positioning synchronization for the NICs and their associated GPR unit. Each HUB supports up to four NICs; additional HUBs can be connected enabling an unlimited number of NICs and GPR systems. Practical power management for advanced portable configurations underpins the design of the HUBs, NICs and GPR systems.

Interconnection of peripherals such as odometers, power supplies, beeper/triggers, GPS and laser tracking units, or additional geophysical sensors, is designed into the SPIDAR® architecture.

SPIVIEW® for SPIDAR®

SPIVIEW® for SPIDAR® is PC-based software that provides the command and control of the GPR network. SPIVIEW® defines a “platform” as a network of GPR units that move in a coordinated fashion with common positioning control. The platform definition includes the relative position of every GPR system in the network as well as peripheral devices used during data acquisition such as the odometer and GPS. SPIVIEW® provides the ability to set up, save and re-call platform configurations. During data acquisition, SPIVIEW® displays one window for each GPR system. The user can also open any window in Full Screen mode to take a closer look at the data collected by that particular GPR. Individual GPR data files are stored in standard Sensors & Software DT1 files.

SPIVIEW® makes collecting grid data easy. The software indicates collected and uncollected lines. The user can add new lines, reverse line directions and easily position lines around obstructions in the survey area.

SPIVIEW® provides powerful real-time data analysis and imaging capabilities. Grid files can be previewed with EKKO_Mapper anytime during grid data collection. The operator can open the current grid in EKKO_Mapper and move up and down through the depth slice images.
